"Gimme Some Motivation"

Statcounter is blowing up, saying you love "Gimme Some Motivation" by Delta Spirit. Well, you know what? The song has a great video; which, I do not believe constitutes chicken abuse. And, you know I'm serious about that stuff; besides, I don't think the ghosts would allow it. If your local shop doesn't have it, buy the record from Monarchy Music.

"Send it in, Jerome!"

While the Terps lost in the first round of the ACC tournament, they should be fresh for the Big Dance. What I am really excited about is the dream match up of Pitt vs. Georgetown in the Big East Tournament Championship tonight at 9:00 on ESPN. I saw the teams play at the MCI center on 2/24, and it was one of the best regular season games I have ever seen between two of the best matched conference rivals in history. The Hoyas are ranked # 9 nationally, while Pitt is at # 11. This will be the Panthers' fifth conference championship game appearance in six years. In the immortal words of Demetrius Gore, "People, Pitt has arrived."

On a semi-related note, here's video I found of Jerome Lane's backboard smashing dunk against Providence in '87 at Fitzgerald Field House.

Delta Spirit & Cold War Kids, of the Monarchy stable

I worked from home today, type, type, typing away at my National Board portfolio; what a racket. Speaking of racket, but the good kind, two albums have been blowing my mind the last twenty-nine hours, and they're both on the indie label Monarchy Music out of Costa Mesa, California. Both Cold War Kids' Up In Rags/With Our Wallets Full, and Delta Spirit's "I Think I've Found It" are soulful, rocking, well written, well produced, and so utterly listenable that it chokes me up every now and again. Two more quick things: both records sound amazing on vinyl and are packaged like records used to be; and, both bands are playing the 9:30 club on March 28.

Sky Blue Sky

I've written about impending RxA & Bright Eyes releases, so I feel compelled to mention the new Wilco, dropping May 15. I hesitate, because I really have no use for A Ghost Is Born. Before I am crucified, let me announce that Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is, in my estimation, one of the ten greatest Rock & Roll LPs of all time.

I submit for you, What Light. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it. I will say that, I believe, one can sound too much like Bob Dylan, and maybe, I might be looking in the direction of Jeff Tweedy; but, whatever, I'll buy the record, and I'd bet I'll like it a lot better than A Ghost Is Born, and I'd bet I'll like it a lot less than Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

SMASH!

So, I don't get over to Georgetown much these days, but I used to. And, I would always stop in and see my old pal Matt Moffatt at SMASH RECORDS on M ST. Matt & I met in College Park in 1995 where he was one in a cast characters that amazingly all survived my college years. The D7 crew will fondly remember Matt's Security Patrol car, and you punk rock fans still get down to the excellent records by his first band, the legendary Crispus Attucks. Later on, Matt was the program director & station manager when I had shows at WMUC. Later still, when I lived on Irving Street, I always enjoyed walking next door to see Crispus Attucks at the Wilson Center, before it became a crappy, tax-funded, private school. Enough history; it's making me feel old. Anyway, Sydney & I just returned from Matt's next project, what will be the new SMASH Records in Adams Morgan! This town/country is in sore need of independent music stores, and the new SMASH will be THE place for vinyl in DC. The new balcony-ed space on the second floor of 2314 18th ST NW is gorgeous, so keep checking the SMASH website, and get ready for a grand, grand opening. If you love music and you live in DC, you'll walk down to SMASH before buying a record online.

Turn Around, Bright Eyes

The new full-length by Bright Eyes, Cassadaga, drops April 10. It is available for pre-order here, along with the B-sides EP, Four Winds(streaming here). The pre-order vinyl comes with a free seven inch for those with basement jukeboxes. If that ain't enough, the pre-orders ship two weeks before the street date! Be the envy of your friends; tell your friends you're friends with indie rock's boy genius - no, not Trash...Conor. He's got a new website and a new video, and here's an MP3 of one of the B-sides from Four Winds, "Tourist Trap." I think it sounds like a lost Harvest Moon song. Oh, and even if you can't stand Conor, like the missus, you should watch the video because a bunch of cowboys throw garbage at him!

It's weird though, because the cowboys LOVE Kings of Leon...

Shamrockfest '07

While the White Anglo Saxon Protestant Hate Mongering Machine was busy cheering on Anne Coulter's slurs over the weekend, good, working Americans were reflecting on a busy Black History Month and kicking off March as a meandering, month long magnification of the great and holy Saint Pádraig, Apostle & Enlightener of Ireland. While Saint Paddy's month is already in full swing over here at CowboySchool Records, the fun really pops off next Saturday, March 10, when Shamrockfest '07 will swallow up Robert Francis Kennedy Stadium & Fairgrounds, a mere four miles from CowboySchool Headquarters in Columbia Heights. 100yearsoftrash will be on the scene, covering the event and enjoying the craic, food, beer, 40 acts on 9 stages, conference hoop tourneys on giant screens, strolling entertainment, carnival rides & games, and authentic Irish and local crafts. But, we won't forget to crawl back downtown to the DC Saint Patrick's Parade Sunday morning.

"No reptiles are found there, and no snake can live there; for, though often carried thither out of Britain, as soon as the ship comes near the shore, and the scent of the air reaches them, they die. On the contrary, almost all things in the island are good against poison. In short, we have known that when some persons have been bitten by serpents, the scrapings of leaves of books that were brought out of Ireland, being put into water, and given them to drink, have immediately expelled the spreading poison, and assuaged the swelling. The island abounds in milk and honey."
