New Bob Pollard!

For these two new releases, Pollard has put together two markedly different albums — one focuses on his super-catchy pop side the other his more down and dirty rock side. It’s like Beatles Vs. Stones! A battle to the death and, of course, Bob emerges as the victor.

As an extra special bonus surrounding these releases, Pollard will be starting his Happy Jack Rock Records Singles Club in June, through robertpollard.net. The Singles Club will feature one 7” single each month for a year with a track from Standard Gargoyle Decisions or Coast to Coast Carpet Of Love as the A-side, and a non-album track on the B-side. These 7” singles will be available exclusively through robertpollard.net.

Freak Folk, Feist

I picked up my tickets for Monday's Devendra Banhart show this afternoon down at 6th & I Historic Synagogue. The staff couldn't have been more hospitable, and even gave S & I a sneak peek at the venue(which was set up for Alan Alda's book talk tonight). This place is a real gem; beautiful and very intimate. Tickets are still available. Listen to this and tell me you're not going.

Devendra Banhart - Tonada Yanomaninista

Even my dad asked me who it was in the Feist IPod commercial; my mom swore it was Chan Marshall. Big up Indie Rock Ma. Everybody loves 1234; These are for Jill:

Feist - 1234
Feist - Mushaboom
Feist - I Feel it All
Feist - Past In Present
Feist - Brandy Alexander

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

So, he is a bit loony, but undeniably likable to us over here at la casa basura. We like him the same way we like Fidel Castro who neglects to allow his people to do some very important things, but we like him anyway. We think his heart is in the right place. He's a good guy doing the best he can under very challenging circumstances. I am proud of Columbia for bringing the Iranian president to the United States.

Little Honda

Many of you know I've been shopping for alternative transportation to carry me beyond Tubman E.S. as the new gig requires. I find myself gravitating toward late '70s/early '80s bikes with <120cc motors. The most common, yet sought after, of these bikes seem to be Honda c series bikes. Their aesthetics, versatility, and practicality are superior to most bikes of any era. A little research finds that production of these bikes began in 1958, and shortly thereafter they inspired Brian Wilson to pen Little Honda. At some point production mysteriously and unfortunately halted in the United States. The bikes continued to be wildly popular in Europe and Asia, and even sell well in both Mexico and Canada. In 2006 the Honda Cub became the first motor vehicle to reach the mark 50,000,000 production units. It's only closest competitor is Hitler's people's wagon, discontinued in 2003 after production of that model's 21,529,464th unit. Why does this most popular motor vehicle in the world remain a tough find in both new and used US markets?

Sixth & I Historic Synagogue

Jonathan Kozol tends to be a polarizing figure in the field of education. Several of my colleagues affirmed my love/hate relationship with Kozol at work today. The Savage Inequalities author will speak at the Sixth & I Historic Synagogue tonight at 9. He is promoting his new book Letters To A Young Teacher. Admission is $6, but two get in free with every book purchase.

The Sixth & I event I & I eagerly anticipate is in two weeks, when the great Devendra Banhart brings his "rich, varied, wild, irreverent, simple, and utterly joyous to listen to" music to the holy venue.

Ryan Adams & The Cardinals

Paramount Theatre
Charlottesville, Virginia
September 14, 2007

Ryan Adams may have sounded his very best last night at the Paramount Theatre in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Paramount is a phenomenal room acoustically and aesthetically, providing for as authentic a live sound as I have heard anywhere. So the sound was good, so Adams was in a good mood, so the band was in a good mood, so the band played well, so the audience behaved themselves, so Adams was in a good mood, so the band was in a good mood, so the band played well, etc. I know now what everyone's been on about with regard to Adams' voice. He goes from a deep tremble to a sweet falsetto, stopping everywhere in between without a sour moment. Neal Casal's dueling guitar dances around Adams' beautifully and his "Highway to the Canyon" breaks up the set just so. With the whole band cheerful and chatty, Adams was far from reserved, glamming it up without his Peanut on Hollywood Boulevard, and freaking out as one with the 1974 Gibson ES 355TD Stereo, Seeing Monsters to close the show.

DC Crack Squirrels

I was just reading an article about how Pete Doherty allegedly smokes crack with his kittens. The last sentence of the article reads: In the US, crack squirrels are a recognised problem in New York and Washington DC parks. I had yet to recognize this problem.

More Important Than The Bible?

That's just what trash friend, Subdonkey & SpringsCultureCast producer, author, and musician Klayton Elliot Kendall asks about Kerouac's On The Road, 50 years after its publication...

Tomorrow we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the publication of Kerouac's On the Road, an event that marked a radical paradigm shift not only in American literature, but Western culture in general. This shift cannot be overstated. Before On the Road, the single most important book in the western hemisphere was the Bible, as it had been for over 1,500 years, ever since the canonization of the books of the Old and New Testaments in the fourth century AD. The new American secularism that we take for granted today -- with its hedonistic motto of "Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll!" -- began with the Baby Boomers, who were the first real benefactors of a modern, technological world. Their guidebook of choice, their Bible, was On the Road. No other book came close in terms of influence and popularity. It's difficult, perhaps impossible, to imagine blue jeans, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, the student revolts of '68, Woodstock, mountains of cocaine, the Sex Pistols, MTV, Jenna Jameson, the Internet, iPhones ... everything that separates us from the superstitious, racist, xenophobic patriarchs of American culture who landed on Plymouth rock in 1620 (and whose disciples still walk among us today), without On the Road on every literate American's bookshelf. The book has inspired countless millions to live life a little differently: with more courage and less hate. I first encountered On the Road as an 18-year-old college freshman, and its kinetic verbal ferocity has inspired me to GO GO GO ever since. I can say, without a doubt, that Kerouac's vision of America, fairytale or not, is the vision I hold most dear, even against the onslaught of consumer sewage that flows unabated from the Wal-Mart and McDonald's on every motherfucking street corner in our godforsaken nation.(NEWSPEAKblog.com)

Self Righteous Rasta Wednesdays

Chris Blackwell was born in London on June 22, 1937 to a Catholic father from Ireland and a Jewish mother from Costa Rica. Shortly thereafter, the Blackwells moved to Jamaica where Chris grew up and received his education, formally and otherwise. As a teenager, Blackwell's job was to service and fill rum shack jukeboxes across the island. With each of Chris' trips back to London, that city's Jamaican expatriate community grew larger and along with it grew a larger demand for Jamaican Ska and Reggae 7". Blackwell began exporting records from Jamaica while still in his teens, an enterprise that eventually blossomed into Trojan Records. By twenty-five, Blackwell had grown out of merely exporting records and had established Island Records in Jamaica.

Island's roster has included Toots & The Maytals, The Slits, Anthrax, The Pogues, Led Zeppelin, Tom Waits, Roxy Music, and U2. This greatest of all independent labels introduced the world to the proverbial Bob Marley & The Wailers.

Bob Marley & The Wailers - Concrete Jungle(Catch a Fire 1973)
Bob Marley & The Wailers - Slave Driver(Catch a Fire 1973)
Bob Marley & The Wailers - Small Axe(Burnin' 1973)

Check 'em.

Fact: According to the United Nations' report "Livestock’s Long Shadow—Environmental Issues and Options," raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined.

Fact: The U.S. military is the single largest consumer of energy in the world.

Fact: On July 22nd, 1999, the Gore Campaign decided to create the perfect photo op to begin cultivating Gore's "green image". Big Al would paddle down the Connecticut River in New Hampshire. The only problem was New England was in the midst of a threatening drought, and there wasn't enough water to keep the fattie afloat. What to do? The Gore Campaign ordered a dam opened, so that 4 billion gallons of water could sail Gore towards the flashbulbs to a tune of 7 million taxpayer dollars.

Fact: Mainstream Democrats don't care about the environment. They neglected to make global warming an issue until they needed something to terrify Americans as much as the Republicans' Muslim Terrorists do.
